of DOCTRINE

“Let my doctrine/teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as the droplets on the fresh grass and as the showers on the herb.” Genesis 32:2
The context of this passage is set within a song that the Lord himself instructed Moses to teach the people of Israel before his going on to be with the Lord. Joshua was to succeed him as leader. The Lord was well aware that Israel would soon turn their backs on serving Yahweh, the Lord and issued this song through Moses as a witness against them. After this song was offered in the hearing of all Israel along with further teaching and blessing, Moses died.
It is curious as we look at this song and that its opening demands that the reader “Give ear”. The reason why was because their leader, Moses was about to impart to Israel some very poignant words. Ironically, after demanding attention to the words about to be spoken & before the actual offering of them he uses imagery such as “rain drops, dew, distill, droplets, showers” to describe this teaching/doctrine that he was now about to present. This is very much like the heart of the pastor toward his congregation as he begins a message that may challenge, rebuke or warn those under his watch.
Moses’ heart was to communicate that what he was about to teach them was meant to refresh and renew their commitment, purify their motives and prepare them for growth.
